KAY BILLIE KLAER ACADEMY The Kay-Billie-Klaer Academy, or KBK as it is more commonly referred to, is located in Legon in the northeast part of the Ghanaian capitol, Accra, about 20 kilometres from the city centre. KBK offers a full curriculum for primary school and junior high students. In addition, it offers two years of Nursery and two years Kindergarten preparatory schooling with students starting at age two. At KBK they start children in phonics in the in the first kindergarten or KG1 level class and by the end of the second year or KG2 they can read fluently.
The school's goals are academic excellence, building good character, and development of individuals who can make unique contributions to their society. The school has a library and computer room with 40 new Hewlett Packard computers for students to work on. The children are taught in English but also receive instruction in French and learn to read and write in the most-widely spoken native tongue, Twi. An important innovation in the school has been the introduction of Greek and Latin into the curriculum in the junior high level, something that is rarely offered in Ghanaian schools. The aim is to help KBK students develop a wider vocabulary in English not only for their present studies, but more importantly to help them in their senior high school and college education.
KBK has just been rated the 3rd best basic (elementary and junior) school in the Accra metropolis area based on the 2008 Basic Education Certificate Examination. Since 2002 when the KBK Started graduating junior high school students, the school consistently scored 100% passes at the Basic Education Certificate Examinations Council. The distinction rate of their candidates has ranged from 68% to 100%, and all their candidates get admitted into the top class senior high schools in the country. Every year, these students stream back to KBK to pay glowing tributes to how well they found they have been prepared for senior high school. As KBK's founders, the DzietZors say, they are building a school that every child will want to attend and every parent will wish they attended.
